“Do at least one thing that pushes you out of your comfort zone” – Belle Bernadette
Elegant and sophisticated, Belle Bernadette shares with us about her journey in the Miss Singapore Universe 2019 pageant. Eloquently expressing her views and perspectives on beauty and fashion, it is no surprise that she was crowned Miss Aspirational and Miss Charm Singapore 2019. At the tender age of 25, she’s already inspiring many others to be bold, expressive and confident in their own skin.
Q: Tell us about yourself, and what sparked your interest in participating in Miss Universe Singapore?
I’ve always had reservations about joining a pageant. It’s scary, because the appetite for pageantry in Singapore is meagre – and you meet a lot more criticism, rather than support. I really had to get out of my own head and the stigma attached to it; instead, I allowed my friends to encourage me in that direction. They became my support group and coming into the competition, I already felt like I wasn’t going into it alone.
I am a model, actress and emcee who is slowly honing my craft in DJing as well. Living a creative life is what I aspire for, so I knew that joining a pageant was in line with the industry I am in. It is a platform that makes you more visible for opportunities.
Q: What were some of the struggles, and how did you overcome them?
The largest struggle was trying to lose weight and tone up for the pageant. I knew I wasn’t at the best form to compete – and before we start pushing for self-acceptance and body positivity (which I am all for), we do have to acknowledge that it is a beauty pageant. The body standards are a little different since they are speculating you on your looks. Trying to adjust my diet and work outs was the biggest challenge for me.
Q: What are your aspirations in life?
I just want to be happy. To live a life that’s free. To fuel creative aspirations and allow others to grow with you. I’ve been so fortunate to have stood alongside women that were comforting, kind and authentic in Miss Universe Singapore 2019. Surrounding yourself with the right people gives you life and that is what I want to continue aspiring towards.
Q: Let’s talk about fashion. Describe your style in 3 words
Q: What is the one piece of clothing from Love, Fioyo that you think all women should own?
Their earrings! I can’t get enough of it. I’ve only recently started implementing earrings into my outfits because it elevates your look tenfold. It’s the easiest thing to do – but adds the biggest impact to your look!
Q:Like our # ilovefioyo fashion family, what other measures do you think we can take as a society to enable women empowerment?
We should have an active community like # ilovefioyo fashion family that organises talks and creative workshops like book clubs, music night, arts and craft (anything really) to make people meet and ENGAGE with one another in an unconventional way.
Q: What advice do you have for women who struggle with self-confidence but wish to ‘Be [their] own label’?
Give yourself space. If you are stuck in your own head, don’t feel guilty for taking the time to unwind and un-knot yourself. After allowing yourself that time and space – date yourself. Take a short trip alone (away from where the root of your problems lies). Listen to music, listen to podcasts, read a book (if you’re scared of feeling alone abroad) – immerse in an experience outside of your own. It will help enrich your perspective on things and the experience will make you more confident as you realise things about yourself (and others) you haven’t known before.
If traveling is not an option – do at least one thing that pushes you out of your comfort zone. I recently joined an acting workshop from HCAC on Lee Strasberg’s Method Acting Introduction class. Before you dismiss the fact that it is not relatable to your career or your personal interest. Please, just try it. The class gave me a community, a safe haven, that taught me relaxation techniques that is applicable to ANYTHING you are facing because it helps you identify and release tension in yourself.
Q: With your new acclaimed titles, how do you intend to inspire women all around?
I’m still in the journey of figuring it out myself. All I can do is live with as much contentment and intention that aligns with my own core values. If someone resonates with my journey, then I’d be happy to sit down for chai latte and share stories and express opinions!
